1)  Grant Aagard gave an update on UDOT’s plans to install Share the Road (STR) signage along some highways.  The exact locations aren’t set yet, but there will be four signs each on:

a.     Highway 12 between Cedar City and Long Valley Junction

b.            Highway 68 (Redwood Road) west of Utah Lake

c.            Highway 18 between Veyo and Saint George

2)  Grant also said that UDOT may be changing their mind to allow donations for specific sign locations, but the signs cannot say “Donated By…”

3)     Travis volunteered to chair the Share the Road committee.  Bob Springmeyer said that he would be on the committee.

4)     Malcolm brought up the idea of creating a bicycle equivalent of the “Blue Ribbon Trout Stream” designation for fishing, but for roads.  Dave Iltis said that he thought that right now we should be focusing on designating routes that are dangerous rather than the ones that are good.  Most people present seemed to agree with Dave.

5)     Travis said that the best approach to getting STR signs installed efficiently would be to look on UDOT’s list of programmed road projects, and get UDOT to install STR signs as part of their road work.  This would require us to be knowledgeable about upcoming projects as well as know which roads we would want the signs on.

6)     Malcolm and Scott Hansen talked about whether to get a separate PO Box or share one with another organization.  We decided to get our own at the Foothill (or Sunnyside?) Branch.

7)     Bob Springmeyer talked about the Bill Corliss accident.  The two messages that he got from the accident were:

a.     Educate Drivers need to stay 3 feet from cyclists

b.     Educate cyclists prohibitions on obstructing traffic, ride no more than 2 abreast and single file on narrow roads with traffic.

8)     Bob said that he could write press releases to get media attention for an event surrounding the Bill Corliss accident.  Malcolm/Bob both thought that a ribbon cutting ceremony for a STR sign on Highway 68 where the accident occurred would be a good idea.  The event will not include a ride.

9)     Travis will check with UDOT folks to see if we can get a sign on Highway 68 as early as April 22.

10)  We discussed getting support from Bill Corliss’s family before proceeding with an event.  Dave made the point that we also need to check with Boris Lyubner and Todd Hageman to see if they already have an event planned.

11)  Gwen will try to borrow a STR sign from the City that we could use for the event.

12)  Travis said that Jason Bultman may be a good person to try to get a STR sign from UDOT really soon, since he has talked directly with John Njord before and it might take such a conversation to get a STR sign installed for an event on April 22.

13)  We decided to have a rally/event on April 22 (Saturday) at 10:00 a.m. in order to raise publicity for getting a STR sign on Highway 68 west of Utah Lake.  The rally will be tentatively centered on Redwood Road near the Saratoga Springs boat marina.  Travis will check to make sure that the boat marina is a public venue that we can congregate at.  An alternative gathering site would be at the Four Corners (Redwood Road and Lehi Main Street intersection) Smith’s store parking lot.

14)  Dave will follow up with this in the racing community.

15)  Travis will get the word out to the Utah County cycling community.

16)  Malcolm will do the overall coordination for the event.

17)  The discussion for this event will occur on the UBC Board List, not the general UBC List.

18)  The discussion shifted to membership structure.  Brad Woods reported on some research that he did on various statewide organizations and how they handle membership.  He said that with the exception of one organization that didn’t list membership information on their website, all orgs had open membership to the public.

19)  We made the decision that UBC would join the Thunderhead Alliance.  That will give us lots of help and resources in the membership area.

20)  Brad said that we need to hash out who would be allowed to be members.

21)  The Texas Bicycle Coalition has a large budget because they administer the state’s Safe Routes to Schools program.  There was a discussion about whether we should try to do that.

22)  There was a discussion about having corporate, advocate and individual levels of joining UBC.

23)  Scott, Brad, and Dave are on the membership sub-committee.

24)  Malcolm reported on an email received from Bob Bayn on the legislature's first
Interim Transportation Committee meeting to be held on April 19th.  On the agenda:

“The Committee will review proposed study items selected from the Master Study Resolution and discuss priorities for the 2006 Interim period. Potential study items that are not part of the Master Study Resolution may also be considered.”

We may need to have a legislator put any item in that rather huge Master Study Resolution for consideration next year.  John Weis took down the information and will follow through.
