Share The Road License Plate Fundraiser

Help create a Share The Road decal and slogan on Utah License Plates.

The Utah Bicycle Coalition (UBC), a 501c3 charitable non profit organization, is raising funds to make available a Share the Road decal and slogan on Utah license plates.  Collected funds will be used to pay the required fees for the special group license plate decal program offered by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Special group plates consist of a five-character combination on the right with the special group sticker on the left and a descriptive phrase or slogan on the bottom.  The UBC has a goal of raising $18,000 by November 2008.  This level of funding will provide for 2500 plates. 

Once the plates are ready for distribution, interested vehicle owners will be able to order these plates on a first come first serve basis when they register their vehicles.  The cost in addition to conventional registration fees will be an annual $25 donation to the UBC and a one time $3 postage fee. 

Several other non profit organizations, such as Clean Fuel-Clean Air have similar special group plates available through the DMV (see http://www.dmv.utah.gov/licensespecialplates.html).  In order for the donations to go to the UBC, the Share The Road license plate will need legislative approval.  Senator Wayne Niederhauser (Sandy) has agreed to carry this initiative in the upcoming legislative session.  In addition to generating some funding for bicycle advocacy, this will be another method for cyclists who also drive to express their support and encourage safety for cyclists on Utah roadways.

Currently, the State of Utah only allows simple icon style images such as represented above. Other states allow the full plate to have graphics similar to the new Utah arch and skier plate designs. The sunburst design could be used in the future once Utah makes that style of plate design available such as below.
